The Center for Global Initiatives (CGI) is an outstanding organization that deeply impressed me during my internship. CGI is committed to tackling a range of global issues, including humanitarian aid, global health, and climate change. Their mission is to break down barriers for those wanting to make a difference by providing free tools and resources accessible to all. This open-source approach empowers individuals and organizations to create positive change, regardless of their resources.

During my time at CGI, I was involved in meaningful research and various organizational tasks. This hands-on experience was invaluable, giving me a behind-the-scenes look at a nonprofit dedicated to global betterment. CGI’s innovative methods address critical issues, from mental health initiatives with the American Psychological Association to climate change efforts in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

One of the most inspiring aspects of CGI is their commitment to transparency and community engagement. Their Facebook group is a bustling hub of activity, offering current events, free training, and resources for anyone interested in humanitarian work. Additionally, their LinkedIn newsletter, "Tools for Change," has over 150,000 subscribers and provides regular updates and insights into their projects and the broader field of global health and humanitarian aid.

CGI’s Fellowship and Certificate Programs in Humanitarian Intervention are another testament to their dedication to education and practical impact. These programs equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute effectively to global humanitarian efforts. The organization’s ongoing efforts to build a comprehensive free resource library further demonstrate their commitment to empowering individuals and communities to take action.

What sets CGI apart is not just their impressive initiatives but their ability to inspire and mobilize people. They aim to provide sustainable solutions and foster a culture of proactive intervention. Their recent inclusion of climate change in their work shows their forward-thinking approach and commitment to addressing emerging global challenges.

Working with CGI was more than an internship; it was an inspiring journey that showed me the profound impact collective efforts can achieve. The team at CGI is incredibly supportive, innovative, and genuinely driven to make the world a better place. Their work is a beacon of hope and a model for how non-profits can create significant change through small projects.

In summary, CGI is an exceptional organization making a real difference in the world. Their comprehensive approach to humanitarian aid, combined with their commitment to education, transparency, and community engagement, makes them a standout in their field. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have been part of their work and look forward to seeing their continued positive impact on global issues. If you are passionate about making a difference, I highly recommend getting involved with the Center for Global Initiatives.

We have known Chris for nearly 10 years. Having just watched a video on CGI’s new partnership with The Miller School of Medicine’s MD/MPH Program at the University of Miami we are reminded about what makes him and CGI so unique. They continue to demonstrate unflinching commitment, always in an over and beyond kind of way, to causes they believe in. Their extensive pool of resources is given away free of charge in line with their inherent open source approach to humanitarian interventions; while their local and international partnerships reflect the same giving spirit. It is worth reviewing the various links that detail CGI’s work spanning psychology and public health and their readily accessible tools and resources. The content is always informative and easy to read. Chris and CGI deserve all of the accolades they receive and then some.

Announcing Our Global Ambassador Outreach Program

We’re proud to announce the development of a new ongoing Initiative. We have developed and maintain an online, asynchronous Fellowship and Certificate Program in Humanitarian Intervention, a longstanding kindergarten in Tanzania for orphaned children, and the Consortium for Humanitarian Intervention that brings together faculty and students from medical schools, graduate programs, NGOs, and various nonprofits across the globe, we are proud to announce the development of the Global Ambassador Program.

I served as a Delegation Leader in South Africa, Czech Republic and Poland for the Citizen Ambassador Program. That Program was initiated in 1956 by the US State Department under the Eisenhower Administration as he envisioned private citizen exchanges, where citizens of diverse cultures would gain an international understanding of their peers and professions, through the in-country exchange of ideas and experiences. My two tours as a Delegation Leader were amazing and rewarding experiences, and I look forward to this opportunity to grow this approach even further with our Program.

Similar to the State Department’s Program, the APA has an International Learning Partner Program that I have also been a part of–participating in projects to Kosovo and Cuba. The idea with all of our Programs is to develop relationships with non-US based sites, centers, organizations and universities (that may also become part of our Consortium), in order to support and further the principles brought forth the in APA's Global Impact The Power of Partnerships, as well as global health aspects and sustainable development. In addition to meetings with leaders in the field, our Delegates would exchange knowledge, ideas and resources, with the goal of long-term international relationships and collaborations. While we may focus on mental health, the Program is not exclusive to psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, or social workers; we seek to have diverse Delegations of professionals (and their partners/family members are welcome as well) from all fields and walks of life. The uniting thread will be delegates’ desire to be of service, continuing learning, and global travel experiences.

The ethos is that of shared collaboration and learning, no West-knows-best hubris or Colonialistic egoism. Like the APA, the idea is to provide and support “the unique opportunity to gain insights into psychology and mental health care across the world, learn from international colleagues…” through professional meetings and also to provide time to enjoy and experience the culture, environment, and people in the areas visited.

The initial planning for our Program includes visits to university, hospital, clinical, community and governmental settings that work with issues of addiction and rehabilitation, trauma, education, aging, policy, immigration, refugees, medicine, global and public health, program development, research and areas of potential collaboration and mutual interest. And where applicable, we also hope to be able to provide Continuing Education credits (CEUs, CMEs, CECs) for clinically licensed Delegates.

As we are in the nascent development stage, I’d value any ideas, contacts, and suggestions of any sort as we build this Program out.

Many thanks for all you do and your help,

Chris

Review is as much based on Dr. Chris Stout as the center, itself. My personal use of the Center is for information.

The programs highlighted, and resources available are both timely and insightful. When I want to look further into what is happening in global health, this is the first place I come to network resources with people, and to find accurate information on what is happening in specific areas regarding the health issues they are facing.

Much of what comes across my news feed is highly processed by the various media channels, or carries a lot of political baggage for the more mainstream outlets, which puts layers in between donors and the effectiveness of programs. CGI does a lot to cut through these filters, focusing on the most urgent needs, and most effective responses for the individuals we are interested in helping.

Dr. Chris Stout truly merits the designation of a humanitarian in the full meaning of the word. Having co- chaired the America Psychological Associations Committee on International Relations with him in 2011 I heard about his different projects and the role he played in fund raising to underwrite these initiatives, in gathering others to volunteer to undertake work in underserved areas, always with a spirit of "can do" and "must do" and yet with a sense of great humility. He is a person in whom others quickly have confidence and trust and the Center for Global Initiatives is inspirted and motivated by his leadership.

I worked closely with Dr. Chris Stout at CGI as an intern. My experience was fulfilling and inspiring. Dr. Stout's model at CGI includes taking on small-scale projects for the betterment of the local populations, and applying each volunteer's strengths for the betterment of the projects; I was able to apply my skills and grow as a young professional while working with him. The organization is run to maximize on-the-ground impact, and all people working for the org do so on a 100% volunteer basis. The biggest barrier to CGI's success is lack of funding. Like many non-profits, CGI struggles for funding (an issue I worked on during my internship): with greater funds, comes the ability to implement more projects.

For example, CGI is applying for a grant, that if funded would do amazing work in Benin to develop natural plants into potential medicines and be a model for self-sufficiency for the people of that country.
In addition to CGI, Dr. Stout is an invaluable resource by generously giving of his time and energy to others who have questions and concerns about their own efforts to enact change through nonprofit work. The main goal of the Center for Global Initiatives is to ameliorate inequalities in human rights and health care around the world. The center develops sustainable projects specific to communities in need around the world. The programs are developed with the advice and input of local advocates in each region; this ensures that CGI is meeting the exact needs of the people while working with their local customs and traditions. This increases local support and makes their projects more likely to succeed. CGI is willing to attempt to solve any problem- from supplying school supplies to children to bringing needed medical supplies to hospitals. Outside of the projects that they develop and run, they act as a hub for organizations around the world, linking communities in need with organizations that can provide the needed relief.
